The foundation of the Congolese military dates back to August 1888, with the establishment of the Force Publique, created during King Leopold II’s reign. This army was characterized by a colonial structure where European officers held all command, while Congolese soldiers were relegated to lower ranks. The Belgian administration made little effort to train local personnel, ensuring continued dependency on foreign management long after independence in 1960.
