The political chaos eventually paved the way for Joseph-Désiré Mobutu to seize power in 1965. After establishing a dictatorial regime under the banner of a so-called National Army, Mobutu's reign was marked by rampant corruption and systematic purges of military personnel suspected of dissent. He funded loyalty among his ranks instead of fostering professional military training, resulting in an army ill-equipped to address internal conflicts and regional rebellions.
