Part 5/10:
Population and Settlement
Currently, Jan Mayen has no permanent residents. Instead, its sparse population hovers around 35 during the summer months, comprising mainly military personnel and meteorological researchers. Temporary housing options include a small settlement known as Olonkinbyen, as well as a few isolated outposts scattered across the island. Transportation to Jan Mayen is predominantly via air travel, with basic facilities such as the Jan Mayensfield Airport providing essential connectivity despite the treacherous landings due to weather conditions.
Freight ships occasionally visit during summer months to deliver goods, while cruises may allow tourists to set foot on the island for short visits.
