Part 4/9:
The Southern Movement emerged in 2007, calling for the independence of South Yemen. It was only after the onset of the Arab Spring in 2011 that significant political upheaval occurred, leading to Saleh's ousting but also plunging the country into civil war. The Southern Movement exploited this chaos, navigating through alliances and confrontations with various extremist groups and the Houthi movement.
The Current Situation
Following a series of conflicts, the Southern Transitional Council (STC) was established in 2017, advocating for southern autonomy. Despite temporary alliances with the Yemeni government in the face of the Houthi threat, the desire for independence remains strong, with the STC controlling key areas in the south.
