While the moral, historical, and potentially legal arguments for southern independence are compelling, the reality on the ground poses significant challenges. The divided loyalties within Yemen, the role of regional powers, and the enduring strength of the Houthis complicate the narrative of independence. Given the desire of the international community to maintain a semblance of unity within Yemen, and avoid recognizing a government that does not control substantial territory, the prospects for an independent South Yemen remain uncertain for the time being.
