Local councils, elected every four years, saw the Conservatives lose approximately two-thirds of the council seats they were defending, resulting in the loss of control over all 16 councils where they had previously dominated. In comparison, Labour also experienced a decline, losing a sizeable fraction of their seats. However, the real story was the Reform Party, which acquired nearly 700 of the total 1,600 council seats available, gaining control of 10 councils.
