In a surprising move, the European Union intervened with a €20 million grant to prevent a humanitarian disaster and, later on, offered an additional €60 million contingent on reforms. Transnistria's government, however, declined the further support, indicating a bold but risky stance. Against this backdrop, Russia managed to renew gas supplies through an intermediary firm, ME Gas and Marketing. This supply alleviated some immediate energy concerns but remains insufficient for Transnistria's industrial revival.
