Part 4/10:
Interestingly, the Transnistrian government has resorted to questionable tactics to maintain its financial stability, allegedly committing fraud against its citizens. A recent increase in utility prices was justified by claiming increased transportation costs, while reports suggest that gas was actually provided for free by Gazprom, leading to substantial albeit misleading revenue for the beleaguered government.
Although Russia's intervention has provided Transnistria some respite, the overarching dependence on Russia and Moldova continues to undermine its sovereignty. The long-term outlook remains bleak, with fears that an exodus of the working population could make it impossible to maintain the current administration's obligations, such as pensions.
