To understand the potential role of CCS, we must first grasp the relationship between fossil fuel combustion and carbon dioxide emissions. When fossil fuels are burned, they emit significant quantities of CO2, creating a greenhouse effect that warms the planet. Hence, the immediate step to tackle global warming is to reduce fossil fuel usage—essentially “turning off the tap” as quickly and efficiently as possible.
CCS, however, offers a different perspective: what if we could continue burning fossil fuels while capturing the resulting CO2? This sounds appealing in theory. But what does reality hold?
