Carbon capture and storage aims to separate CO2 from other gases during combustion, allowing it to be sucked out and stored rather than released into the atmosphere. Unfortunately, the practicalities of achieving this goal are riddled with challenges.
For instance, retrofitting existing power plants with CCS technology has proven prohibitively expensive, with some costs doubling electricity prices. Concurrently, renewable sources like solar and wind power are typically much cheaper alternatives, raising questions about the long-term viability of CCS in economically strained contexts.
