There is a misconception that CCS can effectively block all CO2 emissions. Most projects struggle to capture more than half of the CO2 produced, and startlingly, around 80% of captured CO2 is repositioned into oil fields to facilitate further fossil fuel extraction rather than being stored.
Moreover, the challenges do not end with capture. Finding and maintaining suitable storage sites away from production areas can complicate the logistics even further. Any risk of leakage not only threatens public safety but also risks releasing substantial amounts of CO2 back into the atmosphere—an outcome that could drastically accelerate global warming.
