CCS, despite its shortcomings, may indeed play a crucial role in decarbonizing the sectors that are intrinsically difficult to clean up—such as cement and steel manufacturing—where substitutes for carbon-intensive processes are not yet ready for extensive deployment. The International Energy Agency has identified CCS as critical for achieving net-zero emissions while ensuring that we speed up technological advancements over the coming years.
A Balanced Approach
Ultimately, CCS should not be perceived as a panacea that allows us to continue damaging practices while sidestepping the urgent need for transition. It should instead be viewed as an additional tool—perhaps necessary for certain industries but not a substitute for the overarching goal of reducing fossil fuel dependence.
