The Evolution and Promise of Carbon Capture Technologies
In the early 2000s, while the world was preoccupied with Big Hair bands and flip phones, climate scientists were focused on an urgent issue: how to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and combat climate change. At that time, the concept of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) emerged as a groundbreaking solution. This technology aimed to capture CO2 emissions from fossil fuel plants and bury them underground, presenting a hopeful avenue for reducing climate impacts. As one climate scientist described, it was envisioned as “the most effective way to help Alberta meet its emission reduction goals.”
