Despite its promising beginnings, CCS has struggled to gain traction. In the 1990s, the International Energy Agency aimed for 100 operational CCS projects by 2020, but as of now, only about 40 commercial plants exist. Duncan McLaren, a researcher at UCLA Law, highlighted how CCS was initially embraced by fossil fuel companies as a solution to emission targets while maintaining production levels. The unfortunate reality, however, is that over three-quarters of large-scale CCS projects launched between 1995 and 2018 were abandoned or stalled.
