Following the election outcomes of 1945, where stark divisions within Indian politics were evident, events took a drastic turn. Gandhi's attempts for unity and appeals for peace resonated little against the backdrop of mounting violence and Jinnah's proclamations for a separate Muslim state.
By February 1947, the British realized they had lost control over India. The announcement of independence, with Pakistan emerging as a separate entity, was fraught with chaos. On June 14, 1947, the British government declared the impending partition, and with it, the blueprint for borders delineating India and Pakistan was hastily drawn, often by officials unfamiliar with the region.
