At Thermopylae, King Leonidas of Sparta and approximately 7,000 Greek soldiers stood their ground against Xerxes' relentless onslaught. The famous 300 Spartans, bolstered by their fellow countrymen, heroically defended the pass for three days, inflicting heavy casualties on the Persians. However, local betrayal led the Persians to encircle them. Rather than surrender, Leonidas and his men chose to fight to the death, thus cementing their legacy.
