Not one to back down, Kublai regrouped and launched a second invasion in 1281, assembling an enormous armada of 4,000 ships and 140,000 men. Unfortunately for the invaders, Japan had been preparing and fortifying its defenses. As a fierce storm struck again, the Mongol fleet was once again wrecked. The natural calamities emphasizing Japan's resolve led to the ultimate failure of Kublai Khan’s aspirations to claim Japan.
