The Korean War reflected a significant clash between powers in 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea. Initially dominating the south, the North Korean army faced a pivotal shift when a bold and surprise counter-offensive by UN forces, led by General Douglas MacArthur, regained the upper hand.
However, MacArthur's ambition to push into North Korea and towards the Chinese border went awry when he disregarded explicit warnings from China. The massive counterattack from Chinese forces completely overwhelmed UN positions, marking a turning point in the conflict that resulted in a brutal stalemate along the 38th parallel.
