Part 4/9:
George A. Simeon, a less conventional political figure known for advocating Romanian-Moldovan unification, founded the nationalist Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) in 2019. His presence in Romanian politics has coincided with a resurgence of far-right sentiment. Simeon became widely recognized after a violent altercation with Hungarians during a memorial event in Transylvania, where he falsely claimed he had been assaulted by Hungarians. This incident garnered substantial media attention and ultimately political support for Simeon, enabling AUR to capture 9% of the vote in subsequent elections.
