Today, both the DRC and ROC are marked by severe socioeconomic challenges. In the DRC, rampant corruption, conflict, and poverty plague its vast population, with millions living in extreme conditions. Natural resources continue to be exploited without corresponding benefits reaching the local populace, leading to humanitarian crises and violence.
In the ROC, while the leadership has led to somewhat more stability compared to its neighbor, corruption remains rampant, and much of the wealth is concentrated among elites. The economy is tied to the extraction of oil, continuing the colonial legacy of exploitation.
