In 2018, President Trump withdrew the U.S. from the JCPOA, reinstating sanctions which prompted Iran to retaliate by expanding their uranium enrichment activities. Relations again reached a boiling point in early 2020 when a U.S. drone strike killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, leading Iran to retaliate with missile strikes on U.S. military bases in Iraq. Though no casualties resulted from this attack, the incident underscored the precariousness of peace between the two nations.
