The restoration project focuses on three key components: the rewetting of peatlands, improving fish migratory pathways, and enhancing bird habitats. Each aspect is interlinked, contributing to the overall ecological health of the wetland.
Rewetting Peatlands
Peatlands are a unique wetland ecosystem characterized by the accumulation of partially decayed plant matter in low oxygen conditions. This buildup supports specialized flora such as mosses, sedges, and grasses. The restoration initiative aims to rewet these areas by closing over 3 km of drainage ditches to restore approximately 216 hectares of peatland, similar in size to 300 football fields.
