Two prominent figures, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, exemplify this dichotomy: Messi is celebrated for his innate abilities, while Ronaldo is revered for his relentless work ethic. Interestingly, studies indicate that employers often favor naturally talented candidates over hardworking ones, even when the latter are more qualified. Hiring managers and investors seem to value perceived innate talent more than sheer effort, despite the fact that both require significant dedication.
This begs the question: why do we laud hard work in motivational speeches while our hiring practices contradict this principle?
