On April 12, just three days after Germany invaded Denmark, British destroyers approached the Faroese capital, Torshavn. The arrival of British ships sparked confusion, as locals questioned the motives of these foreign vessels. British Foreign Minister Anthony Eden explained the situation: they needed to occupy the islands to prevent Nazi Germany from establishing a strategic foothold there. The British proposed a temporary occupation and assured they would return control to Denmark after the war.
