When World War II ended in May 1945, much of Denmark celebrated liberation from its German occupiers. However, the atmosphere in the Faroe Islands was more ambivalent. While grateful for the facilities and infrastructure the British had introduced, many Faroese began to appreciate the relative autonomy they had experienced during the occupation.
