Back in the 1950s, Spain was predominantly an agricultural society. However, by the 1960s, as industrialization took off, migration from rural areas to cities surged. Under the leadership of Franco, restrictions on movement limited this transition, but once these restrictions were lifted, around 10 million Spaniards moved, creating an urgent demand for urban housing. Franco’s subsequent construction of affordable homes significantly increased the homeownership rate, leading to a change in the Mediterranean landscape.
