Athens's downward trajectory culminated in 323 BC, following Alexander the Great's demise. Eager for revenge against their Macedonian rivals, Athenians ignored the warnings of Phion, a statesman and general with extensive experience. Predictably, their desire for vengeance led them into a doomed war against Macedonia. After facing inevitable defeat, they turned desperately to Phion, pleading for him to negotiate a surrender, fearing the destruction of their beloved city.
