For decades, the Amhara were part of the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF)—a coalition of ethnically based parties that governed the country. Over time, especially after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s rise in 2018, the political balance shifted. Abiy’s consolidation of power and the dominance of the Oromo-led Prosperity Party marginalized other groups, including the Amhara, leading to increased frustrations.
