Constructed in 1847, Madison Seminary originally served as a private religious school, preparing students to become priests, rabbis, and ministers. In 1859, the addition of a new building expanded its capacity, converting the original structure into a boarding school for students. However, the school closed its doors in 1891, marking the start of a new chapter as the building was repurposed as a Civil War shelter—homes for widows and orphaned children mourning loved ones lost in the conflict.
