Situated close to the winter solstice, the structure features a hole designed to align with the setting sun. During the solstice, the setting sun's rays pass through the hole, marking the precise time for this astronomical event.

While the Inca may have modified or used this structure, the carved surfaces themselves are most likely older than Inca times. The construction style of nearby Inca structures—using stacked stones with rough fitting—differs significantly from the craftsmanship seen on these ancient megaliths, indicating a much older origin.
