Emma resides with her widowed father, David Grossman. Throughout the film, their interactions reveal a strained dynamic. Despite Emma's academic excellence and ambition to earn a citizenship award, the film hints that her seemingly perfect exterior masks a darker reality. The introduction of a new babysitter, Chloe, occurs under ominous circumstances; Emma’s previous babysitter suffered an "unfortunate accident." As Emma remains emotionally detached from the death of the cat, viewers begin to question her true nature.
