During this chaotic operation, Wikus accidentally exposes himself to an alien substance that begins to alter his biology, causing him to undergo a shocking physical transformation into a Prawn. As he grapples with his new identity, the human world turns against him, falsely accusing him of indulging in inappropriate relationships with aliens. Turning to District 9 for refuge, Wikus allies himself with a notable alien, Christopher Johnson, who possesses knowledge of a device that could allow both of them to escape their plight.
