Behrend's journey begins with a dedicated team of experts, including seasoned underwater photographer Mike Johnson, as they embark on an expedition to locate the elusive ocean sunfish. Often regarded as the largest bony fish in the world, the ocean sunfish is frequently spotted off the Pacific coast near California, particularly around the expansive kelp forests that characterize the region.
As the group navigates the coastal waters in search of these colossal creatures, they learn about the rich ecosystem surrounding the kelp. This underwater forest, towering up to 30 meters high, creates a biodiverse habitat teeming with life, from kelp crabs to various species of fish, each relying on the kelp for food and shelter.
