During a press conference on February 1st, NTSB investigator Bryce Banning revealed the sequence of events leading up to the collision. At approximately 8:43 PM local time, the regional jet was instructed to switch runways, ultimately agreeing to take Runway 33 by 8:46 PM. Shortly thereafter, at 8:47 PM, the control tower informed the Blackhawk helicopter of the jet's location as it circled above at about 1200 feet, just south of the Wilson Bridge.
