The fresh air and natural landscapes juxtapose the profound loneliness that chafes at her spirit. She observes the lives of the other animals, and their needs often distract her from her volatile thoughts regarding her own plight.
Yet, as her connection with nature deepens, so does her conflict over killing animals for survival. The visceral trauma from her first hunt leaves scars on her psyche, wrestling with her newfound respect for life amid her desperation. The documentary nature of her report reveals her internal struggles; the degradation of her spirit is echoed in her handwriting, which becomes less frequent as her emotional health wanes through the brutal winters.
