Despite Low's desire for a more action-oriented mission—one that involves tracking a local outlaw named Jono—he must accept this escort detail. The general insists on including Sergeant Whitlock, whose questionable behavior at the saloon the previous night has led to a temporary demotion from Sergeant Major to Sergeant. Whitlock is an experienced soldier; thus, he becomes an essential member of the patrol.
