The primary underlying cause of SANS is the accumulation of fluids in the upper part of the body and head, exacerbated by the lack of gravity. This results in elevated pressure both in the eyes and brain. Recent studies have explored various ocular metrics of astronauts before and after their six-month missions on the ISS, revealing concerning declines in ocular rigidity, reductions in intraocular pressure, and other anomalies.
Given these findings, there is an urgent call for developing countermeasures to combat SANS. Potential strategies may include the application of specific medications, dietary adjustments, and the implementation of devices designed to simulate gravitational pressure to facilitate optimal fluid distribution in the body while in space.
