In a juxtaposition of nature and human ingenuity, we turn our attention to Machu Picchu, the historic Inca citadel perched high in the Peruvian Andes. Rising majestically amidst clouds and mountains, this monumental site was constructed in the 15th century but lay abandoned for centuries until its rediscovery in 1911. Machu Picchu has long been shrouded in mystery, particularly regarding how such a grand city could be built in such an inhospitable location, over 2,400 meters above sea level and atop geological faults.
