The secret to this advanced technology lies in a phenomenon known as "slug flow." This occurs when raindrops switch their movement with bubbles of air inside the tubes, leading to a separation of electric charges. These charges can then be captured by wires connected at both ends of this innovative system.
In laboratory tests, the researchers achieved an impressive efficiency rate, converting 10% of the kinetic energy from raindrops into electricity—five times more effective than traditional continuous water flow methods. With just two tubes measuring 32 centimeters, they managed to power 12 LED light bulbs for 20 seconds.
