Meanwhile, an innovative concept is emerging from Japan, where scientists are developing an alternative way to harness lightning for better storm safety measures. The main objective of this initiative is to send drones into stormy clouds to control and direct natural lightning strikes, aiming to protect technology and structures on the ground.
This pioneering project, spearheaded by the Japanese Corporation of Telegraph and Telephones, has been making significant advancements over the past few years. Recent tests took place at an altitude of 900 meters in the mountainous regions, conducted between December 2024 and January 2025. The team employed a device known as a field mill to measure the intensity of the electric field in the air, observing the approach of incoming storms.
