A team from Cornell University conducted a study exploring how AI can affect writing styles across different cultures. They found that while AI tools are designed to assist, they can inadvertently make cultural expressions more uniform, often diluting the unique voice of users from diverse backgrounds.
The study involved 118 participants—59 from India and 59 from the United States—who wrote about culturally significant themes. The participants were split into two groups: one that wrote independently and another that received suggestions from an AI writing assistant. What emerged was alarming: the AI not only led to a homogenization of the writing styles between American and Indian participants but also reduced the productivity of the Indian users.
