In 1940, American explorer Theodor Mod claimed to have unearthed a city he called the City of the Monkey God, filled with statues and temples depicting monkey-themed motifs and guardian crocodiles. He refused to disclose the location, citing fears of looting, and subsequently died in 1954. His story was dismissed as myth for decades—until Lidar imaging confirmed the site’s existence in 2015.
