Part 2/13:
On the Western Front, the French and French-led Italian offensives continued to press the enemy, but the toll was staggering. The third battle of the Soča River (Isonzo) ended with devastating casualties—approximately 20,000 Italians killed and 60,000 wounded after only three weeks of fighting. The terrain contributed heavily to the high injury rates, with bullets transforming rocky landscapes into lethal blades that inflicted especially severe damage to soldiers' eyes and faces. Despite repeated attempts, the Italians failed to achieve a breakthrough, as Austria-Hungary maintained control over the high ground above the river and closely monitored Italian preparations from well-fortified positions.
