Despite these advances, Serbian forces were in dire straits. They faced encirclement by the combined onslaught of Austro-Hungarians, Germans, and Bulgarians on Kosovo Plain. Serbian supplies dwindled rapidly—munitions and food supplies were cut off, and the front line contracted as enemy reinforcements arrived. By the beginning of the week, Novi-Basar had fallen, and Serbian resistance crumbled, leading to the retreat of Serbian troops from the last of their territory.
