Across the Middle East, the British military campaign aimed to seize Baghdad. Commander Charles Townshend launched an assault on the city of Ctesiphon but failed to achieve decisive victory. The British suffered heavily—more than half of the 8,000 soldiers sent into battle were either killed or wounded. Although the Ottoman defenders also suffered significant losses, they refused to capitulate, counterattacking fiercely.
