Last week, British forces succeeded in capturing Longval and Delville Wood at the Somme. However, this week, their efforts faced chaotic, poorly coordinated assaults, resulting in what can only be described as disastrous. The British launched another attack at Giemont on July 30, repeating mistakes from previous assaults. They failed to grasp the German tactical evolution, notably the Germans’ deployment of machine guns from trenches into shell craters, making traditional infantry advances highly costly.
