The British, for instance, employed Ernest Brooks as their first official war photographer. Brooks, who was a photographer for the Daily Mirror—Britain’s first newspaper to regularly publish photographs—joined the military reserve in 1915 amidst a shortage of experienced photographers. His assignments took him across the Western Front, Gallipoli, Italy, and naval operations, where he captured scenes meant to bolster national morale.
