As 1918 advanced, the tide of World War I was unmistakably turning against the Central Powers. The Allies, although still fighting valiantly, were gaining momentum on multiple fronts. One of the critical developments was the renewed offensives on the Western Front, beginning with the Fifth Battle of Ypres, which commenced on September 28th. Along a 40-kilometer stretch from Dixmude to Ploegsteert, Allied forces launched a coordinated attack aimed at capturing the Passchendaele Ridge, an objective of strategic importance.
