After a year of stalemate and defensive posture following the summer Austro-Hungarian offensive, the Italian Front experienced a dramatic shift. The Italians launched a renewed attack on October 24th, initiating what would be known as the Battle of Vittorio-Veneto. The operation began with a massive bombardment of Austro-Hungarian defenses on Monte Grappa, followed by fierce assaults by the Italian 4th Army. Despite ferocious fighting and the Austrians' deployment of nine defensive divisions against seven attacking Italian divisions, gains remained limited through the week.
