Despite its defeat, Bulgaria harbored hopes of regaining lost territories and expanding its borders based on the principle of self-determination, championed by US President Woodrow Wilson. The Bulgarian delegation argued that Bulgaria had been dragged into the war by Germany and Austria, and their support at the peace table rested on the belief that history and ethnicity justified their claims. They focused on territorial aspirations—recovering Southern Dobrudja, retaining much of Thrace, and, most controversially, claiming parts of Macedonia (Vardar Macedonia).
